How to Play Rummy Complete Beginner’s Guide
01. Know the Goal
The main goal in Rummy is to arrange all your cards into valid sets and sequences and make a proper declaration before your opponents.
02. Understand the Deck
Rummy is usually played with one or two standard 52-card decks (plus Jokers).
Jokers act as wild cards and can replace any missing card in a sequence or set.
The number of decks depends on how many players are in the game.
03. Learn the Basic Terms
Sequence: Consecutive cards of the same suit (e.g., 4♥, 5♥, 6♥).
Set: Cards of the same rank but different suits (e.g., 8♣, 8♦, 8♥).
Pure Sequence: A sequence without any Joker.
Impure Sequence: A sequence that includes a Joker.
04. Deal the Cards
Each player gets 13 cards at the start. The remaining cards form a draw pile, and one card is placed face-up to create the discard pile.
05. Draw and Discard
On every turn:
Draw one card either from the draw pile or the discard pile.
Discard one card you don’t need.
The cycle continues until someone makes a valid declaration.
06. Form Valid Combinations
To make a valid declaration, you must have:
At least one pure sequence
Other valid sequences or sets
Example:
Pure Sequence: 5♣, 6♣, 7♣
Impure Sequence: 9♦, 10♦, Joker
Set: Q♣, Q♥, Q♦
07. Use Jokers Wisely
Jokers are powerful in Rummy. Use them to complete impure sequences or sets but remember, they can’t be used in pure sequences.
08. Declare at the Right Time
Once you have all valid combinations, click “Declare” (or place your cards face-up in offline play).
If your declaration is valid, you win the round.
If not, you lose points so double-check before declaring!
09. Scoring and Winning
The winner gets 0 points (best possible score).
The remaining players get points based on ungrouped cards in their hands.
The player with the lowest total score after all rounds wins the game.
